The
distinction between this and that or these and those is not made as frequently
in French as in English. When the need arises to make this distinction for
clarity, emphasis, or comparison. -ci (=this) is added immediately after one
noun and -la (=that) after the other.
-Quel maillot vas-Lu acheter?
Which bathing suit are you going to buy?
-Je vais acheter ce maillot.
l'm going to buy this / that bathing suit.
-Moi, je vais acheter ce maillot-ci, pas ce maillot-là.
I'm going to buy this bathing suit, not that
bathing suit.
